About the Acting Chancellor

Robert D. Grey

Robert D. Grey is Acting Chancellor at the University of California Riverside. Previously Grey served for eight years as Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor at UC Davis. In this capacity, he was the campus' chief academic and financial officer and the chief governance official for the UC Davis Medical Center. While at Davis, he also served as founding Dean of the Division of Biological Sciences, chair of the zoology department, and associate dean of the College of Letters and Science.

Beginning in January 2005, Grey served for two years Executive Assistant to the Chancellor for Health Affairs at UCR. His role was to help expand
UCR's two-year biomedical sciences program into a nationally distinguished, four-year medical school. He oversaw development of a preliminary proposal, which was approved by the UC Board of Regents in November 2006.

Grey's research field is cellular and molecular biology. He first joined the UC Davis faculty in 1967. He graduated from Phillips University in Oklahoma and received his doctoral degree from Washington University in St. Louis, where he taught and conducted research before joining UC Davis. Grey has also served as consultant for a number of universities on academic issues and has participated on numerous advisory boards and committees.

Grey has received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Teaching Award of the Davis Division of the Academic Senate, the Magnar Ronning Award for Teaching Excellence, and a distinguished alumnus award from Phillips University.

Grey and his wife Kathleen have two grown children. He is an avid gardener who also enjoys playing the organ.
